On Sept 2, 2022, Prof. Xinpeng Xu, Director of the FB-BRC, representing Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre (FB-BARC) of PolyU (see picture below), joined the Belt and Road Global Forum Annual Roundtable with participants coming from more than 100 member institutions to discuss the latest opportunities and challenges of the Belt and Road development. The Forum was held in hybrid format covering three important topics: "Green Development Trends along Belt and Road", "Building Supply Chain Resilience amid Global Disruption", "Mitigating Risk for the New Normal" with emphasis on cooperation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre (FB-BARC) of PolyU has been invited to be an institution member of "the Belt and Road Global Forum"
In July, 2022, Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre (FB-BARC) of PolyU has been invited to be an institution member of "the Belt and Road Global Forum". Global Forum is an alliance currently comprising 161 member associations across 45 countries and regions (https://www.beltandroadglobalforum.com/en/member/forumfull) and focuses purely on business to enhance collaboration, communication and cross-fertilisation of ideas on the Belt and Road in order to realise business opportunities for all members. Every year, representatives of the member associations will also be invited to meet and discuss ways to capitalise on the many opportunities arising from the Initiative, coinciding with Belt and Road Summit to be held in Hong Kong.

On Dec 2, 2021, FB-Belt and Road Centre, jointly organized a seminar entitled "China’s Perspective and Digital Economy in a Post-pandemic World" as part of the Belt and Road Cross-Professional Advancement Programme which was supported by the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau (CEDB) of HKSAR government since 2018. Prof. Xinpeng Xu, Director of the FB-BRC, spoke on the issue of "Digital Currency, RMB Internationalization and the Belt and Road Initiative" as a panel moderator (see program details here)

Dr Achim Czerny, Core Member of the FB-BRC Centre, published a journal paper entitled "Modeling the Potential for Aviation Liberalization in Central Asia-Market Analysis and Implications for the Belt and Road Initiative" (co-authored with Kun Wang, Xiaowen Fu, G29uowei Hua, and Zheng Lei) in Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice (2020, Vol 134, pp 184-210).
Dr Achim Czerny, Core Member of the FB-BRC Centre, has co-edited one forthcoming book with the title "Market Development and Policy Implications - Analysing the Transport and Logistics Industry in the Belt and Road Region" (jointly with Paul Tae-Woo Lee of Zhejiang University and Xiaowen Fu of PolyU) by Elsevier. He contributed one chapter in the book entitled "An Infrastructure Investment Game: Or, Why Belt and Road can Represent an Equilibrium Outcome" (co-authored with Professor Se-il Mun from Kyoto University).

Dr Shaojun Zhang, Deputy Director of the FB-FRC Centre, was invited to give a presentation at the 8th Education and Student Development Salon organized by the PolyU Global and Engagement Office (GEO)
The topic of this salon is Exploring Belt and Road Opportunity: Student Enrichment and Research Development. He reported to the audience the various activities and achievements that colleagues in the centre has accomplished since the centre inauguration in September 2017.

Professor Xinpeng Xu, Director of the FB-BRC Centre, has been working on a
Research Project (2021) on "The green belt and road initiative and China-Kazakhstan relations" jointly with Christopher Ho (a visiting PhD student from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University), Fatima Kukeyeva, Professor, Department of International Relations, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (Work in progress).
The purpose of this paper is to address the research question: what effects does the Green Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) make on China-Kazakhstan relations? Neoliberalism is used to formulate a theoretical framework to examine how China and Kazakhstan will pursue the possibility of mutual wins when petroleum politics is forecasted to become less prominent in the coming decades. The findings based on the 56 joint projects agreed by China and Kazakhstan in 2015 indicate that their cooperation in the high greenness industries has begun to emerge amid the ever-dominating conventional low greenness industries, starting a green trend in their bilateral relations.

On September 24-26, 2019, Faculty of Business ‒ Belt and Road Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, jointly with International Research Center "One Belt One Road" at al-Farabi Kazakh National University, hosted successfully an international conference entitled "The New Silk Road: Shared Prosperity through Cooperation" in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Professor Mukhambetkali Burkitbayev, First Vice-Rector of Al-Farabi Kazakhstan National University and Professor Agnes Cheng, Head of School of Accounting and Finance gave opening remarks on behalf of Al-Farabi Kazakhstan National University and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University respectively. Mr. Mi Guixiong from the Consulate General of the PR China in Almaty presented welcome address. Professor Xinpeng Xu, Director of Faculty of Business ‒ Belt and Road Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University presented Keynote Speech entitled "Infrastructure, Global Value Chain Participation and Economic Development for BRI Economies. The econference brought together academics, experts, representatives of government agencies and business from China, Kazakhstan, other Central Asia countries and Central Europe to discuss issues related to cooperation and development for countries along the New Silk Road.

The PolyU Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre organized the Symposium on Infrastructure Development in South East Asia on 8 April, 2019
The PolyU Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre organized the Symposium on Infrastructure Development in South East Asia on 8 April, 2019. This symposium invited experts from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore to share their knowledge and ideas on infrastructure development in these countries. Professor Gu Qinyang from the National University of Singapore shared his thoughts on the role of private sector in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure building. He discussed the challenges of developing BRI infrastructure projects and gave policy recommendations for decision makers. Professor Cheng Ming Yu from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman of Malaysia gave an update on the latest status of major BRI projects in Malaysia and also shared with the audience some results based on a recent survey of public opinions. Professor Irwan Ekaputra from Universitas Indonesia discussed the challenges and prospects of infrastructure development in Indonesia. Dr. Liu Chunlin, Chairman of K&C Protective Technologies Pte Ltd, Singapore, gave the audience an introduction to building security and explained the applications of key infrastructure protection techniques with case studies. On 10 January 2019, Dr. Shaojun Zhang gave two public lectures at the University of Indonesia to present his recent research findings. His first lecture is on the empirical asset pricing factors in Chinese stock markets, and his second lecture is on the customer-supplier relationships and management earnings forecasts. He also attended and gave comments to the presentations of doctoral students’ research proposals. Professor Dr. Irwan Adi Ekaputra, Director of Graduate Program in Management, hosted Dr. Zhang’s visit and discussed future collaboration on academic research and students’ exchange studies.

On 7 January 2019, Dr. Shaojun Zhang gave a public seminar on the development and opportunities in financial markets along the Belt and Road at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysia. His lecture covers the background of the Belt and Road Initiative, presents the key features of financial markets along the Belt and Road, and discusses the dual-class share structure and the financing of innovative companies. Professor Dr. Ming-Yu Cheng, Chairperson of the Belt and Road Strategic Research Centre and Director of the Institute of Management and Leadership Development at UTAR, hosted Dr. Zhang’s visit and organized a roundtable meeting to discuss research and education collaboration.
Dr. Zhang also visited TusStar Malaysia, an incubator of high-tech start-up companies. Ms. Mandy Chan and Mr. Victor Sim welcomed Dr. Zhang’s visit and discussed future collaboration on entrepreneurship education and exchange visits of young entrepreneurs between Malaysia and Hong Kong.

On 3 January 2019, Dr. Zhang gave a public lecture on the development and opportunities in financial markets along the Belt and Road, which was organized by the Belt and Road International Business School in Singapore. His lecture consists of four parts. The first part covers the background of the Belt and Road Initiative. The second part presents the key features of financial markets along the Belt and Road and compares them with developed financial markets. The third part is on the dual-class share structure and the financing of innovative companies. The fourth part includes an introduction to financial derivatives and illustrates with real-world examples the potential damage that misuse of financial derivative products can cause. Mr. Jianli Feng, the founding Dean of the Belt and Road International Business School, presented the certificate of appreciation to Dr. Zhang.

On Dec 15, 2018, Prof. Xinpeng Xu, Professor of Economics at the School of Accounting and Finance, Faculty of Business and Director of Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, presented a research paper on the Impact of China’s Belt and Road Initiative to the 10th Biennial Conference of the Hong Kong Economic Association (HKEA) held at Xiamen University in Xiamen, China. Using latest available international survey data on soft power and China’s overseas direct investment (ODI) statistics, Prof. Xu’s paper, co-authored with Dr. Voon of Lingnan University, examines if China’s belt and road initiative (BRI), announced at the end of 2013 and commonly perceived as an institution set up by China to build cross-border infrastructure and bolster trade, had increased China’s international image or soft power. Their difference-in-difference analysis based on data over the period 2011 to 2016 shows that the impact of BRI on China’s soft power is stat istically insignificant. The empirical results imply that there are various negative factors at play that might have diluted the expected positive effect accruable from the massive investments across the BRI countries, suggesting that closer micro and macro management of BRI projects may be necessary.

On Dec 5, 2018, Prof. Xinpeng Xu, Professor of Economics at the School of Accounting and Finance, Faculty of Business and Director of Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was invited to give a Keynote Speech at the 3rd Belt and Road Financial and Economic Development Forum held at Xiamen National Institute of Accounting, Xiamen, China. Prof. Xu spoke on "the Belt and Road Initiative, Soft Power and Risk Management", providing preliminary empirical evidence on the issue. The public forum attracted more than 200 participants from academia, policy making circle and the industry.

Professor the Honourable Bob Carr gave a public lecture at PolyU on Apr 14, 2018
Professor the Honourable Bob Carr was invited to give a public lecture on the Australia-China Relationships and the Belt and Road Initiative at PolyU. Prof. Carr is a former Foreign Minister of Australia (2012-2013), the longest serving Premier in New South Wales (1995-2005), Professor in International Relations and the Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute (ACRI), University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Professor Agnes Cheng, Head of the School of Accounting and Finance, gave the welcome remarks at the opening of this public lecture. Professor Carr’s lecture was well-attended by members of the Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre, students from the MSc in China Business Studies Programme and the MSC in Business Management Programme, and audience from outside PolyU.

Prof. Xinpeng Xu was invited to deliver a Public Lecture at Peking University, China on Sep 29, 2017
Prof. Xinpeng Xu, Professor of Economics at the School of Accounting and Finance, Faculty of Business and Director of Faculty of Business – Belt and Road Centre, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was invited to deliver a Public Lecture at Peking University (China) on comparative economic development entitled "Rice, Institution and The Wealth of Nations: The China Puzzle" on September 29, 2017. In the lecture, Prof. Xu first discussed the literature on why some countries are so rich while others so poor. He then presented a new hypothesis that thousands of years of farming practice has independent and long-lasting effect on the wealth of nations today. Prof. Xu showed that for the whole world sample rice farming is negatively associated with economic development, independent of the effects of geography and institution. However, the case of China presents a puzzle. He showed that empirical results using disaggregated county-level data suggest a different pattern. Finally, Prof. Xu discussed the potential channels of the long-lasting effect, the China puzzle and implications for China’s long-term growth. The Public Lecture was well received, attracting an attendance of more than 200 Peking University professors and students.
